Watt Named Top Female Amateur Golfer in the Granite State with NHWGA Player of the Year Award
Concord, NH – As the 2021 golf season comes to a close, the New Hampshire Golf Association (NHGA) is proud to announce this season’s Player of the Year award recipients. Earning this year’s honors are Jim Cilley (Laconia CC) claiming the Thomas J. Leonard Jr. Player of the Year award, Tara Watt (Derryfield CC) earning the NHWGA Player of the Year award, Bryce Zimmerman (Nashua CC) with the Kirk Hanefeld Junior Player of the Year award for the second-straight season and Craig Steckowych (Portsmouth CC) winning the Senior Player of the Year award for two consecutive years.
The NHWGA Player of the Year award recognizes the achievements of a player competing at a higher level in NHWGA events as well as other state, regional and USGA championships. Tara Watt’s accomplishments throughout the 2021 season made her a well-deserving recipient of this award. Throughout the season, she won the NHGA Women’s Match Play Championship, NHGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship for the second-straight year, NHGA Women’s Team Championship with partner Betsy Knights and finished second at the NHWGA Championship.
She capped her season off with a trip to the USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship in September, competing against the top female amateur golfers ages 25 and older, where she narrowly missed a chance at match play by two strokes.
“What an honor to be playing with the top female amateur golfers (25+) in the country”, stated Watt. “Not too many people get to say that they have done that. The USGA knows how to put on a tournament, and I just felt like I was on a whole different level that week and it was simply awesome.”
Through all of this, Watt ranks 2021 among her top three seasons. She commented, “I was able to play in more tournaments this year than I normally do which was nice, so I had more opportunities to get some wins. Every season I'm out here doing what I love is a great season in my eyes. I hope I have many more in my future.”
Watt is honored and proud to be named the NHWGA Player of the Year. She said, “There's a lot of practice, mental and physical, that is behind the scenes that people don't see, so to be able to tee it up, put it all together, and perform at the top is the best you can hope for. It's great to be recognized for the hard work.”
Players can expect to see Watt out on the course next season as she looks to defend the championship titles she won in 2021 and look to find herself at the top of the leaderboard each time she tees it up.
