State Amateur Qualifying Presses On; 40 More Players Earn a Spot at Abenaqui Next Month

Bedford, NH – Two days, two New Hampshire Amateur qualifying events and 40 golfers happy to earn a spot in the field at Abenaqui Country Club next month.  The largest of the six qualifiers took place yesterday at Beaver Meadow Golf Club with 86 golfers teeing it up trying to earn one of the 27 available spots.  Gavin Richardson led the way with the only under-par round of the day, 70 (-2) with 26 golfers shooting 80 (+8) or better moving forward.  44 players then took to Manchester Country Club with 13 available spots into the State Amateur.  Mat Gover’s 73 (+2) held up as the low round of the day and 12 additional golfers at 80 or better advanced on.

Gavin Richardson, a Beaver Meadow Golf Course member, took to his home course looking to secure a place in the New Hampshire Amateur taking place next month at Abenaqui.  Little did he know, he would card the low round of the day for medalist honors.  He went out and made three birdies on the front nine at Beaver Meadow to turn at three-under par.

The back nine was playing a little harder but Richardson was able to keep his game together.  The 15th hole at Beaver Meadow played the hardest for the field, but Richardson had no problem, making a birdie on that hole.  He played the back nine at one-over par, finishing his round with a 70 (-2).

It came down to the final group to determine the cut line with those shooting 80 (+8) entering into a playoff for one final spot, there were 8 golfers for 1 spot.  Derek Jensen of Concord Country Club was the lone golfer to make birdie on the first playoff hole to snag that final qualifying spot.

At Manchester Country Club, with the threat of rain in the air, Mat Gover set the pace for the day coming in with a 73 (+2) to end up being the low qualifier among the 44 golfers that teed it up.  Gover started out strong with a birdie on the first hole at Manchester but bogeyed the long par-3, 3rd hole to get back to even par.  He went on to make one more bogey and one more birdie to make the turn at even-par, with the lead.

When it came to the challenging back nine, Gover worked himself to one-under par at one point with a birdie on the 13th hole.  He struggled on 15 and 16 where he went bogey-double bogey and parred the remaining holes to finish up at two-over par, 73.  He ended up being medalist by just one stroke, beating out Dave Larrivee of Manchester Country Club and Griffin Barbaro from Stonebridge Country Club, both posting a 74 (+3).

The cut line at the Manchester Country Club qualifier ended up at 80 (+9) with a playoff for the one final spot in the State Amateur.  It only took one hole where Patrick Mahan made a par to advance on.
