Ferullo Fires Three Under Par Round to Lead Rochester State Amateur Qualifier
Rochester, NH – With the start of a heat wave upon us, the ‘Road to Concord’ began at Rochester Country Club as 67 golfers were vying for 18 spots into the 121st New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Davis & Towle Insurance Group. Leading the field and setting the pace was Kory Ferullo, Rochester Country Club member, who fired a three-under par 69, to be the only golfer to finish under par in the qualifier. Ultimately the 18 golfers shooting 78 (+6) or better are advancing on to Concord Country Club next month.
With seven birdies across 18 holes, Kory Ferullo ended up being the only golfer to manage an under-par round and finished as medalist of the Rochester State Amateur Qualifier by four strokes.
“I was hitting the ball well off the tee, which, out here is going to be very helpful”, stated Ferullo after his round. “I hit a lot of good shots and made a lot of good putts on the front nine to save par.”
Ferullo made the turn at two-under par, joined by Jake Nutter and Myles O’Quinn who were in the first group of the day. The challenging back nine of Rochester Country Club was in front of them, though, which is where Ferullo may have had the advantage. While Nutter, O’Quinn and other golfers found some trouble on the back nine, Ferullo held steady at one-under par on the back nine for a three-under par total.
With Rochester being his home course, Ferullo felt comfortable with his game, he said, “I do feel very comfortable. I’ve played it 100 times, but you still have to hit the shots at the end of the day. But it lets you play loose.”
Now moving on to Concord Country Club for the New Hampshire Amateur, Ferullo is excited to be heading back. He commented, “It feels good after missing it last year, not playing well at my qualifier so I’m happy to be back and hopefully I can make it to match play.”
Other top golfers to qualify are Myles O’Quinn and Kevin Strong, who each had a strong start to their rounds but ran into more bogeys than birdies on the back nine. O’Quinn was tied for the lead after the first nine holes but with three bogeys on his card and zero birdies to balance those out, he finished up at one over-par, 73 for the day. Kevin Strong made four straight birdies on the front nine, one of the best starts a golfer can hope for, but one double bogey and a bogey kept his front nine to one-under par. He also carded three bogeys on the back nine but had one birdie to join O’Quinn with a 73 (+1). While they did not finish the way they hoped, they are both comfortably within the cut line and headed to Concord next month.
18 golfers in total are headed to Concord from the Rochester State Amateur Qualifier. Those finishing up with 78 or better are happy to find their names among those who are now qualified. Thank you to Rochester Country Club for hosting our first qualifier on the ‘Road to Concord’.
