Breakfast Hill Ready to Make Their New Hampshire Open Debut
Greenland, NH – The 88th playing of the New Hampshire Open Championship presented by Michelob Ultra is headed to Breakfast Hill Golf Club in Greenland for the first time in the championship’s history. 156 professional and amateur golfers from all over are looking forward to spending a few days competing at one of the seacoast’s top courses from June 23rd through the 25th, looking to take home this year’s trophy.
The New Hampshire Open presented by Michelob Ultra is a 54-hole stroke play championship with a cut to the low 40 players and ties following 36 holes of play. This is the first time Breakfast Hill Golf Club will host this event which is in its 88th year. This year’s field is made up of 105 professional golfers both from New Hampshire and around the country, with 51 amateur competing alongside them.
With 156 talented golfers in the field, it is sure to be a tournament to keep your eyes on as anyone could be crowned this year’s champion. There are three past champions in this field this week, Michael Kartrude (2019), Jason Thresher (2018) and Don Robertson (1981), all returning to New Hampshire for another go at the title. Kartrude is fresh off a victory in the Massachusetts Open held at Longmeadow Country Club where he won by one stroke. With that win, Kartrude joins two other competitors in this field who call themselves Massachusetts Open champions, Jason Thresher (2016-2018) and Mike Martel (2019).
Thresher, who won the New Hampshire Open in 2018, also competed in this year’s Massachusetts Open, finishing T8 and eight shots back of Kartrude. Thresher won three-straight Massachusetts Open titles, which is a rare feat to accomplish. His last Massachusetts Open title came the same year he claimed his New Hampshire Open victory. Mike Martel had a great run as an amateur having won the New Hampshire Amateur Championship twice, in 2013 and 2019, before taking on the professional side of golf.
Other notable players in the field this year are Shawn Warren and Matt Paradis. Warren finished Runner-up to Chris Crawford in the 2021 New Hampshire Open, ending up just one shot back of Crawford in the end. This year Warren earned a spot in the field of the PGA Championship held at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, OK, his third PGA Championship appearance. He will look to be in contention again this year with hopes of taking home the New Hampshire Open title. Matt Paradis is a name many New Hampshire golfers are aware of as he captured the New Hampshire Amateur title in 2018. He returns to his home state to try and capture another New Hampshire victory.
Breakfast Hill Golf Club, one of the state’s younger courses as it was completed in 2000, is shaping up to be a great test for the competitors this year. The course stretches to about 6,500 yards and will play as a par 70 for the championship.
“This year, we saw more registrations for the New Hampshire Open than we have in the past five years”, stated NHGA Tournament Director Kinsey Hoffmann. “The numbers speak volumes to the excitement surrounding the Championship coming back to the Seacoast area, and specifically Breakfast Hill GC after having to postpone the event at the club in 2020.”
While the club was set to host the event in 2020, the tournament was cancelled, like many other championships in the region, due to COVID-19. It has been almost 50 years since the last time this tournament was held at seacoast golf course and the NHGA is thrilled to be bringing it back there this year.
Breakfast Hill will be challenging as it presents narrow fairways, forcing golfers to place their tee shots in the right spots to avoid the rough, bunkers and being blocked out by trees on their approach shots. Hoffmann stated, “We are looking forward to the course providing a true test for the players over the three days of the championship, and I think that will be evident to the players as soon as they step up to their first tee shot.”
