Finalists Determined as Match Play Championships Continued at Kingswood

Wolfeboro, NH – The Match Play Championships pressed on as those advancing from the previous round took on Kingswood Golf Club.  The Championship Flight players were competing in their Semifinal matches to determine those moving on to the finals at Golf Club of New England, while all other flights were competing to determine this year’s flight champions.

Mid-Amateur Match Play
With some key matchups in the Semifinals, top seeded players Jalen Rines and Ross Oberg were eliminated from the tournament by their competitors.  Harvin Groft, the 5 seed, took down Rines 5&4 after quickly getting to 3up after the first five holes.  While Rines battled on the remaining holes to stay in the match, Groft closed it out on the 14th hole to advance to the final match being played at The Golf Club of New England.

Matt Moore has also landed a spot in the Mid-Amateur division final match by defeating Ross Oberg 3&1.  Moore now goes up against a tough competitor in Harvin Groft who has breezed through the bracket, winning most of his matches on the 15th hole of the course.  Moore, however, had a few closely contested matches on his path to the finals.

Senior Match Play
Similar to the Mid-Amateur division, the top seeds in the Senior Division will not be moving on to the final match, including five-time and defending Senior Match Play champion, Craig Steckowych.  Steckoywch lost his Semifinal match 3&2 to Phil Pleat after a close match the entire way.  Pleat proudly moves on to compete in the finals.

The 3 seed, Danny Arvanitis took down the 2 seed, Peter Keilty in their Semifinal matchup.  Arvanitis quickly got a lead over Keilty as he was 3up after 5 holes to set the precedent early and never let Keilty get back in it.  Arvanitis won the match 5&3 and will now face Pleat in the final match at Golf Club of New England next month.

Women’s Match Play
The Women’s division saw just one upset in the Semifinal round as Diane Bova defeated Cindy Perkins 4&3 to advance.  Bova got herself to 2up in the match early on and then extended it to 4up at the turn.  Perkins started to battle back on the back nine at Kingswood, cutting the lead in half but ultimately ran out of time.  Bova now looks ahead to the final match at The Golf Club of New England.

The 2 seed, Joan Cyr faced a 2023 Women’s Match Play finalist, Rowena Wilks in the Semifinals.  While it was a close match for much of the way, Cyr was able to close it out on the 17th hole, winning 2&1.  Cyr will now face fellow Rochester Country Club member, Diane Bova in the final match.
