It's the Summer of Carys: Fennessy Wins NH Women's Amateur by 18
Rochester, NH – What a summer it has been for Carys Fennessy as she picks up her second championship title of the summer. Fennessy fired another three-under par, 69 at Rochester Country Club to win the New Hampshire Women’s Amateur Championship presented by Vigilant Wealth Management. Fennessy turned some heads last year winning by a margin of 15, but this year, she outdid herself and won the tournament by 18 strokes over the next competitors. Julianna Megan and Mady Savary finished tied in the runner-up position of the tournament, completing the tournament at 12-over par.
She started the round with a seven-shot lead and started to extend that lead after the second hole when Savary stumbled with a double bogey. From there, she rolled in a birdie putt on the par-4, 3rd hole to extend it even more. At that point, it was likely out of reach for anyone to catch her, so it was a matter of Fennessy against the course. She made the turn at one-under par and held a 12-shot lead at that point.
Adversity set in when thunder and heavy rain rolled in over the course, causing a one hour delay and wet conditions when play resumed. At that point, the leaders had just made the turn and had nine holes left to play. That didn’t slow Fennessy down one bit, she carded birdies on 11 and 15 to get herself to six-under par. Uncharacteristically, she missed a short par putt on the 16th hole and settled for bogey but added another birdie to her card on the 17th hole to get back to six-under for the tournament, where she finished up in the end.
Fennessy won the tournament by an 18-stroke margin, three more than last year’s win. She commented after her win saying, “I didn’t know about the lead until the last hole. It did surprise me, but it just goes to show how much time I’ve put into it and how important hard work is.”
This is Fennessy’s second tournament win of the season and second-straight New Hampshire Women’s Amateur title. She stated, “It's a really great feeling, I’ve worked hard all summer to be here so its nice to see that pay off.”
Fennessy has really set herself apart from the rest of the field in the last two years, making it difficult to keep up with the level of play that she is at. When it comes to her game, she commented on certain aspects of what is working, saying, “Hitting fairways and hitting greens and trusting my putter. And just having confidence in my game; it’s the biggest thing for me.”
With this win under her belt, she heads into a busy August filled with tournament golf. She said, “This was definitely a good kickoff to the August run that I have full of tournaments. I have been hitting the ball good so I will definitely continue doing that and work on my short game a little bit and I should be good for tournaments to come.”
Mady Savary and 2022 champion, Julianna Megan finished tied for second place at the end of the day. Savary, who came into the tournament with a goal of finishing inside the top 10, didn’t have the final round that she hoped she would have, but she far exceeded her goal by finishing in second place. Megan, who started the day five shots back of Savary, had a solid and steady three-over par, 75 in the final round to move her way up the leaderboard and into a tie with Savary.
The New Hampshire Golf Association would like to extend a thank you to the entire staff at Rochester Country Club for their hospitality throughout the three-day championship. The course condition was great and held up well against the weather conditions that the week brought.
