Fennessy Extends Her Lead at NH Women's Amateur With One Round Left to Play
Rochester, NH – New day, second round, and the same person leads the way in the New Hampshire Women’s Amateur Championship presented by Vigilant Wealth Management at Rochester Country Club. Carys Fennessy carded a 69 (-3) to extend her lead to seven after 36 holes of play against the top amateur players in the Granite State. As last year’s champion, she has experience entering the final round of this tournament with the lead and looks to claim her second-straight title with one more round to play.
While circumstances seem similar to last year’s New Hampshire Women’s Amateur, the difference is the number of strokes that Fennessy leads by. Last year, after two rounds of play, Fennessy had a comfortable 13-stroke lead to propel her through the final round. This year is a little different as the gap between Fennessy and the next competitor is seven shots, which is still a sizable gap but something that someone could capitalize on if Fennessy doesn’t bring her best golf.
The second round brought a lot more consistency for Fennessy and a game that she is a lot more familiar with. She only had two bogeys throughout the round and rolled in five birdies, which helped her to a three-under par day and a larger lead.
“Today was pretty consistent compared to yesterday”, commented Fennessy. “I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens, so it gave me a chance at a lot of birdies putts.”
It’s safe to say that Fennessy has successfully eased her way back into tournament golf and is just getting settled. She stated that her confidence was with her today, which helps significantly, especially when she stands over the ball with her driver in hand. She said, “I was more confident and had less nerves over the ball which makes all the difference out there.”
Now with a seven-shot lead, she heads into the final round of the competition looking to capitalize on the position she is in. She stated, “Going into tomorrow, I’m just going to play the game that I have been playing and hopefully extend that lead. But just to have that padding is important.”
The same four names continue to sit atop the leaderboard, including 15-year-old Mady Savary who maintains her second-place position with a second round, 75 (+3). Savary was disappointed in how her first round finished up and was looking to get some redemption on the final two holes at Rochester Country Club. She started strong with four-straight pars until she rolled in her first birdie putt on the par-4, 5th hole. She only ran into trouble on the 9th hole where she carded double bogey to make the turn at one-over par, but still in a strong position.
Savary’s back nine was strong as well, aside from the double bogey she had on the par-3, 12th hole. She was able to play the 17th and 18th better, a goal she had for herself after yesterday’s round, but with the two double bogeys on her card, she finished the day with a 75 (+3), now seven strokes behind Fennessy.
Julianna Megan and Eva Gonzales are tied for third place after round two after shooting the same scores each of the first two days. The two a pair of 77’s (+5) in the second round, putting them five shots back of Savary and 12 shots back of Fennessy. Both are college golfers proudly representing their schools this week, Holy Cross (Megan) and Merrimack (Gonzales).
The final round of the competition is queued up to be an exciting round with everyone chasing down Fennessy who has truly found her form in round two.
