Rivers & Hill Capture Their First Women's Team Championship Title
Concord, NH – Starting out the day, Julie Rivers and Sharon Hill had a hold of the lead at the New Hampshire Women’s Team Championship being held at Beaver Meadow Golf Course. The duo fired a three-under par opening round to lead by two with 18 holes left and the defending champions, Joan Cyr and June Ferland, sitting two shots back of them. After a slower opening nine in the final round, Rivers and Hill turned on the jets for a back nine surge of back-to-back birdies which proved to be the deciding factor in their win. They shot 75 (+3) in the final round to win the tournament by the same two-shot margin that they started with.
Julie Rivers and Sharon Hill have proved to be a great pairing on the course, picking up their second NHGA win this season. After an opening round 69 (-3), predominantly done on Rivers’ ball, the two sat in the lead by two shots with 18 holes left to play. They had defending Women’s Team champions, Joan Cyr and Ferland trailing them by two, with the capability of rolling in birdie putts to pass them. Rivers and Hill got off to a slower start than the previous day, carting three bogeys on the front nine to sit at three-over par, but still holding onto the lead.
As they made the turn, their mindset shifted, and they started to make consistent pars which is what kept them in the lead. Coming to the 14th and 15th holes, Hill rolled in back-to-back birdie putts to set their team apart a little bit more. It turns out that they needed those birdies to avoid a playoff in the end as they went on to make back-to-back bogeys immediately following those birdies. Rivers saved par on the final hole to seal the deal on their win.
Ferland and Cyr didn’t let them get away easy as they started to close the gap on them after nine holes when they were just two over par. They made another birdie on the 10th hole at Beaver Meadow but made three bogeys on the back nine to set themselves back from a run at the title again. They finished it out strong, with a birdie on the 17th hole and par on the last to finish in the runner-up position, two shots back of the winners.
The team of Mindy Inglis-Reid and Caroline Fang also started to make a run and they started early in the second round with an eagle on the second hole of Beaver Meadow. They made the turn at one-under par and kept it rolling into the back nine. However, back-to-back bogeys on the closing holes didn’t help their cause. They ended up at one-over par on the day and three shots back of the winners. They finished tied for third place with the team of Laurie Ethier and Deb Clauson who shot 72-75 to be three-over par for the tournament. One of their highlights came from a chip-in birdie from Ethier on their last hole of the tournament.
The NHGA would like to thank Beaver Meadow Golf Course for hosting this tournament. The course and weather were perfect across the two days of the championship.
