'NHGA's Busiest Day' Concludes with Last Stop of the Road to Concord

Concord, NH – In what was the New Hampshire Golf Association’s busiest day of the season, the NHGA staff was spread out among three courses running the final New Hampshire Amateur Qualifier of the season at Canterbury Woods Country Club, the first round of the Women’s Team Championship at Beaver Meadow Golf Course and the first round of the New Hampshire Junior Amateur Championship at Cochecho Country Club.

Road to Concord
New Hampshire Amateur Qualifying concluded as the final 18 qualifiers into the New Hampshire Amateur were determined at Canterbury Woods Country Club.  Across two weeks of qualifying beginning at Rochester Country Club and making stops at Keene Country Club, Beaver Meadow Golf Course, The Maplewood Golf Course, Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club, Amherst Country Club and Canterbury Woods Country Club, 106 golfers earned their way into the 121st New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Davis & Towle Insurance.  The 156-player field will take on Concord Country Club beginning next Monday, July 8th.

Qualifying for the championship stayed below eight-over par at each site, with the lowest qualifying scores coming from the Keene and Beaver Meadow qualifiers.  At those two sites, golfers needed to shoot four-over par or better to advance on to Concord.  With the field now determined, pairings and tee times will be released in the coming days.

Women’s Team Championship
The Women’s Team Championship kicked off at Beaver Meadow Golf Course on one of the most beautiful golf days of the year.  Defending champions Joan Cyr and June Ferland teed it up again to defend their title and were leading the tournament after the first nine holes, alongside two other teams.  After starting off with a bogey, they bounced back with a birdie on the second hole and made par the rest of the way on the front nine to turn at even par.  The teams of Julie Rivers/Sharon Hill and Laurie Ethier/Deb Clauson also shot even par on the front nine of Beaver Meadow.

While Cyr and Ferland had a strong back nine, rolling in two birdies, they finished up with a 71 (-1).  Their one-under par score puts them in second place after the first round as Rivers and Hill had a great back nine, making all pars until the challenging 16th hole where they carded eagle and then closed out their round with a birdie on the 18th hole to shoot a three-under par, 69 for the lead by two shots.  Ethier and Clauson trail one shot behind Cyr and Ferland as they shot even par, 72.

With 18 more holes to go at Beaver Meadow, it will be an exciting final round to determine this year’s Women’s Team champions.

New Hampshire Junior Amateur Championship
After Day 1 of the New Hampshire Junior Amateur Championship Charlie Martin leads the field with a score of 69 (-1) at Cochecho Country Club.  Martin had an eagle on the front and four birdies on the back to help maintain the only score below par for today’s event.  After shooting a 36 on the front, Martin was just one stroke behind Andrew Surprenant who shot an even par on the front and back of the course finishing the day with an score of 70 (Even).

In the Girls division, we have a tie for first place after Day 1 between Madelyn Savary and Teagan Nadeau who both shot a score of 77 (+3).  Savary’s two birdies on the front helped her score a 35, which led the division by two strokes at the time.  However, Nadeau was able to stay consistent and had just two bogeys on the back to shoot two-over par which led to today’s tie for first place.

The field now shifts up to Mount Washington Resort Golf Club for the remaining rounds of the tournament.
