Salo Brothers Succeed on Second Playoff Hole to Capture NH Four Ball Title

Thornton, NH – Aside from a brief period of rain towards the end of the first round of the New Hampshire Four Ball Championship being held at Owl’s Nest Resort, it was a picture-perfect day to play 36 holes to crown our next New Hampshire Four Ball Champions.  In dramatic fashion, the 36-hole tournament ended in a tie with Cam and Damon Salo finishing at 16-under par, alongside Rob Henley and Nick MacDonald.  Needing two extra holes to decide the champions, Cam Salo drained a 30-foot putt on the Owl’s Nest’s 18th hole for birdie to ultimately win the championship.

The Salo Brothers got off to a strong start in the first round of the tournament and never looked back in the first 18 holes.  Cam Salo stated, “We got off to a super hot start, we were both making birdies on the same hole.  We were six red [under] through 9, I think I had six birdies on the front nine.”

“We just ‘ham and egged’ it well all day”, continued Cam.  “If I made a bogey, he would make a par when we needed it.”

They ended up setting the pace for the field in the first round with a 10 under par, 62, with the next closest team being two shots back of them.  They went 10-under par going bogey-free which can be tough to do.  As the field got set for the second round, the Salos knew they had a target on their back.

“We got off to a slow start in the afternoon, we lost momentum for a bit”, commented Damon Salo.  “Cam birdied 9 after we bogeyed 8 with wedges in our hand.  After the 9th hole when he made birdie, we just went on a tear on the back.”

After Owl’s Nest’s 9th hole, they went bogey-free again and posted a 66 (-6) in the second round to once again find themselves at the top of the leaderboard, but they had company this time.  Rob Henley and Nick MacDonald posted a pair of 64’s (-8) on the day to join the Salo Brothers at the top, which meant both teams were in for a playoff.  They headed to Owl’s Nest first hole to start the playoff.

“I figured birdie on the first hole was going to win because they’re both high caliber players and unbelievable”, stated Cam Salo.

Henley and Cam Salo ended making routine pars on the first playoff hole so the teams headed to the picturesque 18th hole to hopefully decide the champions.  The only player in the fairway with their tee shot was Nick MacDonald who put his second shot the closest of all four.  However, Cam Salo managed to put his shot on the green after being behind a tree on the left side of the hole.  Cam then stepped up to his putt with confidence and ended up draining the 30-footer.  Henley and MacDonald each had a birdie look but ended up missing for the Salo Brothers to capture their first New Hampshire Four Ball Championship title.

“It was a good team win, we played well and finished on top, it was great”, Damon Salo said after their victory.

This tournament not only marks the Salo Brothers first NHGA championship title as a team, but it is also Cam Salo’s first-ever win and Damon Salo’s second win in a row.  Both players are in fine golf form heading into the remainder of the championship season.
