Upsets for Mid-Amateurs While Top Seeds Move Forward for Seniors & Women As Match Plays Continue
Nashua, NH – The Mid-Amateur, Senior and Women’s Match Play Championships continued as those remaining headed to Sky Meadow Country Club for the Quarterfinal matches. The Mid-Amateur division saw a number of upsets in the bracket, while the top four seeds in the Senior and Women’s divisions remain in the tournament. The top four remaining look ahead to their Semifinal matches taking place at Montcalm Golf Club next month.
None of the four Quarterfinal matches of the Mid-Amateur division made it past the 15th hole, with three of them ending on the 14th hole. Scott Doughty, the 12 seed, knocked out Keith Stone, the 4 seed, 6&4. Doughty held a commanding lead in the match after the first nine holes, he was 7up over Stone at the halfway point. Stone tried to work his way back on the back nine but ran out of holes, losing on the 14th hole. Doughty moves on to face Adam Godbout in the Semifinal round who defeated Jason Allen, 5&4.
Another upset in the Mid-Amateur division came when Eric Emeneau, the 15 seed, defeated Jalen Rines, the 7 seed, 5&4. Emeneau came into his Quarterfinal match fresh off his win in the Senior division of the Nashua City Championship where the final round was played at Sky Meadow Country Club. Emeneau had some course knowledge on his side in his match which can be important to have playing at Sky Meadow. Emeneau will now go up against Mark Stevens, a strong competitor who took down Harvin Groft, a past champion of the Mid-Amateur Match Play, 4&3.
In the Senior division, all four of the top seeds have secured their spots into the Semifinal round. In similar fashion to the Mid-Amateur division, none of the four matches advanced past the 15th hole at Sky Meadow. The division’s top seed, Danny Arvanitis had no problem defeating Bob Landry in their Quarterfinal matchup, winning 5&3 to now face Bob Mielcarz in the Semifinals. Arvanitis and Mielcarz are two former State Amateur Champions, drawing upon their years of match play experience to carry them through this tournament.
The two-seed, Bill Everett took down Bill Krueger in the Quarterfinals, 4&3. Everett won this tournament back in 2017 and is looking to make another run at the final match but will have to go up against Craig Steckowych in the Semifinals. Steckowych secured his spot into the Semifinals with a 5&4 win over Jim Jankowski at Sky Meadow. Everett has a strong competitor ahead of him as Steckowych has claimed four Senior Match Play titles and lost to Mielcarz in last year’s final match.
It's a similar story in the Women’s division as the top four seeds find themselves in the Semifinal round. Rowena Wilks confidently closed out her match against Karen McKeen on the 13th hole at Sky Meadow, winning 7&5. She moves on to face the 4-seed, Deirdre Rogusky in the Semifinals at Montcalm.
Corey Richardson is also heading to Montcalm next month with a 4&3 win over Yuhui Svendsen. Richardson was just 1up after nine holes over Svendsen, claiming she was not playing her best golf. The two battled it out back and forth for much of the round, but Richardson was able to solidify her spot into the Semifinals on the 15th hole at Sky Meadow. Richardson will now face Deb Clauson in the Semifinals. Clauson finished runner-up last year and is looking to chase the title this year. She’s off to a strong start by winning her Quarterfinal match with Melissa Harman, 1up.
The Match Play Championships are set to continue on August 28 at Montcalm Golf Club with the Semifinal matches.
