Cyr and Ferland Head to Second Round of Women's Team with Three-Shot Lead
Canterbury, NH – Temperatures heated up in a hurry in Round 1 of the Women’s Team Championship taking place at Canterbury Woods Country Club. Despite the heat, scores were low, especially from the leaders, June Ferland and Joan Cyr who carded a six-under par, 67. The teams of Kat Bordeau/Linda Pletch and Beth Hamilton/Mindy Williams finished up at 70 (-3) to trail the leading team by three strokes with 18 holes left to play.
June Ferland and Joan Cyr, referred to as The Twins, have historically teamed up together in the Women’s Team Championship. Last year they finished the 36-hole championship in a tie for the lead with Dale Nims and Kat Bordeau, forcing a playoff to decide the winning team. Unfortunately for the twins, they lost on the first hole of the playoff, settling for a runner-up finish. This year, they are at Canterbury Woods Country Club looking to claim the title once and for all.
Looking at their scorecard, they are the perfect pair, going back and forth all day with one making par or birdie where the other might have been out of the hole. They got off to a steady start with Cyr making par for the team on the fist two holes. Ferland contributed next with a par before Cyr rolled in the team’s first birdie of the day on the par-5, 4th hole. From there, they poured in two more birdie putts to make the turn at three-under par.
Two teams came close at the turn. Kat Bordeau and Linda Pletch made the turn at two-under par after an eagle and birdie, but a bogey on the opening hole kept them from a tie for the lead after nine holes. Beth Hamilton and Mindy Williams had a steady front nine where Williams made birdies on the 3 and 4 to get their team under-par and Hamilton made the clutch pars to remain consistent.
The Twins never let up on the back nine. Ferland made her first birdie of the day on the 10th hole to get their team to four-under par. After six consecutive pars, Cyr made another birdie on the par-3, 17th and Ferland added another on top of that on the 18th hole to get them to six-under par, 67. As the first group out in the morning, they certainly set the pace and the tone that they are looking to capture this title.
Bordeau and Pletch had a steady one-under par back nine with a Bordeau birdie on the par-5, 15th hole and pars the rest of the way. After the first hole and opening tee shot, Bordeau had a strong day on the course, shooting one-under par on her own ball. Pletch was able to make the necessary pars along the way to keep their team in contention.
Hamilton and Williams each had a birdie on the back nine. Williams rolled one in on the downhill par-3, 11th hole which can be tricky with club selection and Hamilton’s birdie came on the par-5, 16th hole. Although they weren’t able to make it out of the 13th hole with a par, they settled for bogey which kept them to one-under par on the back and a final best ball score of 70 (-3). They now look to chase down The Twins in the final round.
One additional team snuck in under with a very strong back nine. Kim Comstock and Cindy Perkins had a mediocre front nine that did not include any birdies but unfortunately did include two bogies. Although they made the turn at two-over par, they collectively made four birdies on the back nine and just one bogey to score a three-under par back nine for a 72 (-1) overall. They will be starting the final round five shots back of the leading team.
As the field prepares to take on the heat for a second day, Joan Cyr and June Ferland have a three-shot cushion as they look to take on Canterbury Woods Country Club for 18 more holes.
