Zetterholm & Rohde Weather the Storm for Medalist at Breakfast Hill Qualifier
Greenland, NH – With a one-hour weather delay to start the day, the sixth State Amateur Qualifier of the season commenced with 17 spots up for grabs among a field 72 golfers at Breakfast Hill Golf Club. Ryan Zetterholm (Pease GC Online) and Steven Rohde (Abenaqui CC) led the way with the only under par rounds from the field at 70 (-1), just one stroke better than fellow competitors, Myles O’Quinn (Portsmouth CC) and Kevin Strong (Rochester CC). Those able to shoot 76 (+5) or better will be moving on to the 120th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Wedü.
Zetterholm returns to New Hampshire competitions this summer, first with the New Hampshire Open where he missed the cut by three strokes and now with New Hampshire Amateur qualifying. Despite his New Hampshire Open result, he turned right around to sit at the top of the qualifying leaderboard at Breakfast Hill and headed to Manchester Country Club next month.
Playing some of the most steady and consistent golf from anyone in the field, Zetterholm started off with eight-straight pars and closed out his front nine with a birdie to make the turn at one-under par. He did card one bogey on the back nine, on the par-4 11th hole at Breakfast Hill but rolled in one more birdie on the 15th hole to finish up with a 70 (-1).
In the pairing right behind Zetterholm was Steven Rohde who shot equally as good with a one-under par, 70. Rohde’s front nine is what really shot him up the leaderboard.
“I was able to get off to a pretty hot start, I birdied the first two which is great”, stated Rohde after his round.
After his opening two birdies, he bogeyed the par-4 3rd hole but rolled in two more birdies on the front nine, on holes 5 and 6 to make the turn at three-under par, heading to the back nine with some confidence. Rohde only had one bad hole out there, making a double bogey on the 12th hole but recovered by making another birdie on the 14th hole. Although he did card a bogey on the 16th hole, he finished up with a respectable 70 (-1).
Rohde commented, “Aside from 12, I just really didn’t make any mistakes. I gave myself some looks and made a few putts. I’m really happy with the number I ended up at.”
He looks forward to playing at Manchester Country Club, he has never competed in the New Hampshire Amateur before and looks forward to the challenge of competing against the top amateurs in the state.
17-year-old Myles O’Quinn finished up one shot back of the two leaders with an even par, 71. O’Quinn’s front nine was one that turned some heads as he went bogey-free and rolled in three birdies to get himself to three-under par. Like many others, he found some trouble on the back nine with four bogeys and one birdie, including a bogey on his last hole that kept him from going under par. Regardless, O’Quinn now finds himself heading to the New Hampshire Amateur.
Along with O’Quinn, Kevin Strong had a solid qualifying round on even-par. Starting off with a bogey, he bounced right back with a birdie on the par-5 2nd hole at Breakfast Hill. Although he did have two more bogeys on the front nine to make the turn at two-over par, his back nine made up for it. Opposite of O’Quinn, he went bogey-free on the back nine and carded two birdies to finish with a 71 and comfortably within the cut line.
17 golfers who were able to shoot 76 (+5) or better are moving on the 120th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Wedü.
