31 Golfers Advance Through Qualifying to Compete at New Hampshire Amateur Next Month
Canterbury, NH – Today marked the first day of qualifying for the 119th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Smuttynose. Over 100 golfers took to Maplewood Golf Club and Canterbury Woods Country Club for the first two of six State Amateur Qualifiers being conducted over the next 10 days with 31 moving on to compete at Abenaqui Country Club in the New Hampshire Amateur next month.
Maplewood GC member Spencer Stevens led the way at his home course as he fired a three-over par, 75 to earn medalist honors among a group of 34 vying for a spot in the championship. Stevens started out his round by getting to three-over par thru four holes but was able to turn it around and par the next nine holes. He had one bogey and one birdie on the back nine to finish the day with a 75 (+3).
A playoff was needed to determine the final player who would be moving on. Three players shooting 79 (+7) entered a playoff for one qualifying spot. Grady Sturges prevailed after two holes by going par-par to grab the last qualifying spot from the Maplewood GC Qualifier.
Over at Canterbury Woods Country Club, four players tied at the top of leaderboard and earned a spot at Abenaqui Country Club in just a few weeks. Patrick Hesseltine (Laconia CC), Matthew Moore (Canterbury Woods CC), Brendon Lafleur (Campbell’s Scottish Highlands) and Bobby Marulli (Ridgewood CC) all shot 73 (+1) to find themselves safely within the cut line and at the top of the leaderboard.
After a shaky start from Matthew Moore, he was able to put some birdies, pars and one eagle on his card to help erase the two bogeys and one double bogey he had on his opening three holes. Moore made the turn at two over par and played his back nine at one-under par to finish up with a 73 (+1). Hesseltine also had an up-and-down front nine with a one-under par back nine to tie Moore at 73.
Lafleur found himself under par after nine holes at Canterbury Woods with three birdies and two bogeys but a double bogey, two bogeys and two birdies landed him in a tie for first as well. Marulli had a steady front nine, just one birdie and one bogey on the card to make the turn at even par. Despite his bogeys outnumbering his birdies on the back nine, he still kept it to one-over par and secured a spot at the New Hampshire Amateur next month
Five players who shot 78 (+6) entered into a playoff for the final four qualifying spots at Canterbury Woods. Moving on from the two-hole playoff are Jack Pepin (Atkinson Resort & CC), Patrick McKenna (Windham CC Online), Brendan O’Sullivan (Derryfield CC) and Richard Peek (Exeter CC).
These 31 golfers will all tee it up at Abenaqui Country Club next month in the 119th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Smuttynose.
