Under Par Back Nine Propels Cyr and Ferland To Top of Women's Team Leaderboard After Round One
Loudon, NH – There were plenty of blue skies but the wind was out in full force for the first round of the Women’s Team Championship being held at Loudon Country Club. Despite the breezy conditions, Joan Cyr and June Ferland lead the way as they finished their opening round with a two-over par, 74 to lead by three strokes. 2020 champions, Mindy Inglis-Reid and Beth Hamilton, along with Kim Comstock and Cindy Perkins, trail by three strokes with 18 holes left to play.
Cyr and Ferland, names that are often at the top of the Women’s Team Championship leaderboard, found some success out there as a team as they lead by three strokes after the first round. Their opening nine might not have been what they hoped for when they started out as they carded two bogeys and a double bogey, but one birdie putt did fall for Cyr on the 7th hole.
At the turn, they were three-over par and two shots back on the Inglis-Reid and Hamilton team which turned at one-over par. They had some work to do on the back to stay in position or even work their way up the leaderboard. It started out steady on the back making pars until the 14th hole when Ferland made her birdie putt. They did card one bogey on the 16th hole, but Ferland made up for it with another birdie on their closing hole to end the day at two-over par, 74.
Talking about their gameplan, Cyr stated, “We just said lets just ding and dong, lets just shoot for pars and birdies will happen.”
Steady was the name of the game for the two and they put that on display, especially on the back nine at Loudon. Ferland talked about what was working for them, saying “Staying steady and making sure one of us did something each hole.”
With 18 holes left to play and strong competitors in the field chasing them, Cyr and Ferland hope to be able to replicate what they did in the first round. “We will hopefully get more birdies tomorrow but we’re just going to try to keep it in play and pick each other up”, commented Cyr.
Inglis-Reid and Hamilton, past champions of this event, have Cyr and Ferland in their sights as they begin to prepare for Round 2 of the competition. They certainly had it going on the front nine and even made the turn with the lead at one-over par, with contributions from both players. They each made birdie the 6th hole and Hamilton poured in another birdie on the 7th hole to give them a boost of confidence.
Unfortunately for them, no birdie putts fell, and they were forced to settle for a few bogeys on the back nine to finish their round at 77 (+5) and three shots back of leaders Cyr and Ferland. They will look to close the gap in the final round.
Tied at three-over par with Inglis-Reid and Hamilton is the team of Kim Comstock and Cindy Perkins. The duo opened up their round making back-to-back bogeys, quickly getting themselves to two-over par but seemed to settle in from there. Another bogey game on the 4th hole, but they managed pars the remainder of the front nine, turning at three-over par. At the turn, they were tied with Cyr and Ferland.
Their back nine was much steadier as they only made bogeys on 14 and 15, making pars on all other back nine holes. The two went back and forth for much of the round, covering for the other when one might have been struggling a little bit. Comstock and Perkins actually lead the Net side of the competition at five-under par. They will hope to roll in a few birdie putts in the final round to make an attempt at catching Cyr and Ferland.
For the Women’s Team Championship, Loudon Country Club is playing at around 5,100 yards, but with the wind in the first round of the competition, it likely felt longer. This tournament is a 36-hole championship with teams of two competing in a best ball format competition.
