Bretton Woods, NH – On a day with very few surprises or upsets, nine-time Champion Bob Mielcarz (Concord CC) beat two-time defending Mid-Amateur Champion Brett Wilson (Golf Club of New England) 2&1 to continue his quest for title number ten.

“My goal coming into the week was just to make match play” Mielcarz said after his win. “Now I am by round one we’ll see where it goes from here.”

Mielcarz will once again be playing an experienced winner, as 2011 Amateur Champion Jim Cilley will be his second round opponent. Cilley advanced to the semifinals last year before falling to the eventual champion Joe Leavitt.

After surviving the grand march Tuesday evening, 59th seed Dylan Cowette (Manchester CC) used the momentum to take down 2013 champion Michael Martel (Crotched Mountain GC) on the 18th hole. Cowette will play John Perkins Thursday.

Co-Medalists Connor Greenleaf and Joe Leavitt both advanced easily 3&2 and 5&4 wins respectively. Greenleaf will play Billy Forcier (Abenaqui CC) tomorrow after Forcier won in 22 holes today. Leavitt will face Alex von Svoboda (Baker Hill GC) Wednesday morning.

Eighteen of the top nineteen seeds all advanced, with 6th seed Martel being the highest seed defeated in round one.

The round of 32 will start tomorrow morning with round of 16 matches to be played in the afternoon. Quarterfinals and Semifinals are scheduled for Friday with the 36-hole final match to be played Saturday.
