McKee Earns Second Junior Championship Title with Stellar Play
Author: Kate Kellar
June 29th 2016 - Concord, NH –   James McKee of Windham Country Club has been crowned the 2016 Junior Champion over Brandon Gillis of Souhegan Woods Golf Club.

The match got off to a shaky start for McKee as he lost the first three holes to go to the fourth hole 3-down to opponent, Brandon Gillis.  In fairness, two of those holes were lost in part to Gillis making birdies and proving that you had to make a birdie to win the hole or, in some cases, halve the hole.

McKee’s battle back truly began on the seventh hole as he managed to win four holes in a row, with birdies being important to stay afloat in the match.  When the match came to the 17th hole, it was a make-it or break-it moment for McKee.

“I knew going into the hole that I’d need to make birdie just to halve.  Brandon knows how to score.  When I saw him hit the green I knew he was going to two-putt for birdie”, says McKee.

Despite missing the green in two, he chipped up and drained his putt from about twelve feet to halve the hole.  McKee went on to win the 18th hole and the match at 2 up.

When asked how it feels to win, McKee states “It feels pretty incredible.  This is one of the tournaments that I look forward to the most out of the year.  The NHGA has become like a family; I know all the kids from New Hampshire now, it’s really nice to show up and have some fun at a tournament you grew up playing and love and especially now, win it.”

The way Brandon Gillis played cannot be overlooked—his putter could not be stopped; he finished the match with four birdies and just two bogeys.  Gillis will be competing in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship coming up in July at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee and will be attending Wake Forest University in the fall of 2017.  McKee will be attending West Point in the fall of 2017.

The 75th Boys State Junior Championship, held at Concord Country Club, brings together the top junior players from around the State to compete in 18 hole of stroke play qualifying to advance to match play round in their respective flights.
