Twinning in Canterbury: Joan Cyr and June Ferland Capture Women's Team Title
Canterbury, NH – Another steamy day for golf at Canterbury Woods Country Club as the final round of the Women’s Team Championship got underway. The Twins, Joan Cyr and June Ferland started out the day with a three-shot cushion with 18 holes ahead of them and strong teams behind them, hoping to chase them down. They were not going to let that happen as they did what they needed to do to capture their first Women’s Team Championship title with a total score of 143 (-3) over the 36-hole championship. In the end, they won by two strokes over Kat Bordeau and Linda Pletch who shot 75 (+2) in the final round, one shot better than The Twins.
In last year’s Women’s Team Championship, Cyr and Ferland finished 36 holes tied for the lead and ultimately lost in a one-hole playoff to Kat Bordeau and Dale Nims. This year, they were out for redemption. Getting themselves into a great position for the final round, they shot 67 (-6) in the first round, three strokes better than any other team.
Joan commented on the team’s mentality after the first round saying, “Yesterday driving home, we said ‘Let’s not do what we did last year. Let’s just go play our game and not be nervous.’”
They followed through with that game plan with a birdie on the opening hole of their second round to give them confidence as they faced the rest of the course. Despite both team members making bogey on the 3rd hole, they made back-to-back birdies on the 5th and 6th holes to get themselves to two-under par on the day and eight-under for the tournament.
The duo finished out their front nine with a pair of bogeys on the 9th hole, but it did not matter as they still maintained a four-shot cushion as they headed to the back nine. The back nine ended up giving them more trouble as the heat of the day might have started to wear on them. They made five bogeys on the back nine as a team and only rolled in one birdie putt on the par-5, 15th hole. With a four-over par back nine, they shot 76 (+3) to end the day.
“Today was a little bit of a struggle, we bogeyed the same holes. We felt the pressure of everybody chasing us”, commented June after the round.
While they may have felt the pressure, the other teams around them were also struggling in the second round. Cyr and Ferland’s game plan was to keep their lead. Ferland said, “We were just trying to stay ahead of the group we were playing with because we knew they were in second place.”
Bordeau and Pletch had a rocky front nine which set them back early as they made the turn at one-over par, with a single birdie from Pletch on the second hole. That would end up being the only birdie the team had in the second round. While Bordeau and Pletch weren’t making moves up the leaderboard on the front nine, Beth Hamilton and Mindy Williams got themselves to two-under par on the day after seven holes as Hamilton rolled in their second birdie. Hamilton and Williams found themselves in second place for the timebeing, but carded double bogey on the par-3, 8th hole to get back to even-par for the day and three-under for the tournament.
As The Twins started to make bogeys on the back nine, the Bordeau and Pletch team held steady making pars the majority of the way. It wasn’t until the 16th hole where they made another bogey to get themselves to two-over par on the day and one-under par overall. They ended up finishing two shots back of The Twins for a runner-up finish. Hamilton and Williams, like many others, made a string of bogeys on the back nine to slip back down the leaderboard, taking themselves out of contention.
Joan Cyr and June Ferland were able to hold off strong, competitive teams to capture their first Women’s Team Championship title.
The NHGA would like to extend a thank you to the entire staff, Proshop, Maintenance and Food & Beverage at Canterbury Woods Country Club for being so welcoming of the course of this tournament. The course is in impeccable condition and was a challenging, yet fair test for the 72-player field.
