Author: Kate Kellar
August 17th 2017 - Manchester Center, VT –  Seven of New Hampshire’s top junior golfers made the trip over to Manchester Country Club in Manchester Center, Vermont for the annual New England Junior Invitational.  Phin Choukas (Hanover Country Club) and Eric Evans (Portsmouth Country Club) each found themselves in the top 10 of all New England junior golfers while Team New Hampshire finished in fifth place at the conclusion of the 54-hole event.

The New England Junior Invitational is a 54-hole tournament where each New England State brings seven of their top junior golfers to compete in an individual and team event.  For each round, the lowest five scores of the seven-man team are counted towards the team total.   Team New Hampshire was made up of Sam Barton, Phin Choukas, Eric Evans, Jack Nadeau, Bryce Zimmerman, Doug Champagne and Jake Raichle.  The team finished just three shots back of Team Vermont with Choukas and Evans both cracking the top ten of the individual competition.

Choukas went 73-70-74, one over par total for 54 holes, to finish T7 while Evans was 76-72-72, four over par total to finish in solo 10th place.  Jack Nadeau finished just two shots behind Evans at six-over par and in 12th place for the tournament with 76-72-74.  The player to beat was James Imai representing Team Massachusetts who broke the Manchester Country Club course record in his first round with a 65 (seven under par) and went on to shoot 70-71 in his final two rounds to finish at ten under par for the championship.

Team Massachusetts dominated the competition this year and was the only team to finish with an under-par total, -9.  The second place team, Team Connecticut, finished 23 shots behind Massachusetts with a +14 team total and Rhode Island followed 11 shots behind them at +25.

The New England Junior Invitational rotates around among the six New England states each year and Manchester Country Club in Manchester Center, Vermont was a beautiful site for this year’s event.  The course played to about 6,800 yards with a straight forward front nine and trickier back nine that requires more precision with each shot.
