Thresher Sets Threshold High in Opening Round of NH Open
Author: Kate Kellar
July 26th 2017 - Bedford, NH –  Jason Thresher (West Suffield, CT) set the bar high early in the day by firing a 5-under par, 66 that went untouched for the remainder of the first day of the 84th New Hampshire Open Championship presented by Xfinity with support from Northeast Delta Dental.  The next low score came from Matt Arvanitis, New Hampshire professional, who shot 67.  From the amateur side, Jake Goodman (San Antonio, TX) leads the way at 2-under, 69 which is followed close behind by home course player, Ryan Tombs at 1-under par, 70.

Thresher found seven birdies out on the course today including two on his opening two holes and added three more on the front side alone.  With two more birdies on the back nine and a closing bogey, he locked in the low round for the day early, forcing the rest of the field to match him.

In the final group of the day off the front nine, Matt Arvanitis posted a 67 which came the closest to matching Thresher’s 66.  Arvanitis is familiar with Manchester Country Club having played multiple rounds at the course growing up and then having worked at the facility.

In reflecting back on his round today, Arvanitis said, “I made six birdies out there and hit a bunch of greens.  I didn’t make many mistakes.”

Knowing that there are numerous great competitors in the 156-player field, his strategy for tomorrow doesn’t change much.  He says, “I just have to keep on going.  There’s a lot of good players and they’ll get used to the course the second time around so I have to keep on going.”

Ryan Tombs, in a similar situation to Arvanitis, has grown up playing Manchester and says, “I’ve been playing here for seven years so it’s nice to see how my scores compare to the pros that come in.”

“I am definitely eyeing for the low amateur title; I know this course just about as a well as you can know a course”, says Tombs.  Tombs sits in prime position to take advantage of his local knowledge and fire a low second round score.

On what was a perfect day at Manchester Country Club with perfect conditions, a remarkable number of competitors returned a 2-over, 73.  24 golfers found common ground in that number and will all be fighting it out during Round 2 to make the cut to the final round.

Round two will begin at 7:30AM on Thursday, July 27th

The New Hampshire Open is a three-day, individual stroke play event.  All players play 18 holes each of the first two days.  Following round two, the field is cut to the low 40 plus ties who then play 18 holes in round three to conclude the tournament.
