Strong Showing from the New Hampshire Contingent at New England Amateur
Author: Kate Kellar
July 20th 2017 - East Providence, RI – Following the week-long New Hampshire Amateur Championship, some New Hampshire golfers migrated down to Metacomet Country Club in Rhode Island for the New England Amateur Championship, a three-day tournament that features the top amateur golfers from the six New England states.  Three New Hampshire players made the 36-hole cut to the final day of the tournament, Matt Paradis (Concord CC), Ryan Tombs (Manchester CC), and Nick Hampoian (The Golf Club of New England).
Matt Paradis, who comes off his second in a row runner-up finish in the New Hampshire State Amateur, finished the New England Amateur with a one under total, 279, putting him in fourth place overall out of 156 players who began the event.  With fellow Southern New Hampshire University golfer, Josh Lacasse, on the bag all week, Paradis shot a 36-hole total of even par, 140.
Going into the third and final day of the championship knowing he had 36 more holes ahead of him, he turned on the jets for a 67 in Round 3.  He certainly climbed the leaderboard fast with that number as he was tied for second going into the fourth and final round of the tournament.  He finished it off with a 72 but shouldn’t be disappointed as a top 5- finish in the New England Amateur is a respectable position.
Two solid rounds on the final day propelled Ryan Tombs up the leaderboard to a T13 finish.  To make the cut, Tombs shot 71-75, 146, but showed up ready to play on the final day.  His round 2 and round 3 scores were a pair of 69’s, 2 under par for the day and four over par for the tournament.
Also making the cut representing New Hampshire is junior golfer, Nick Hampoian.  This is Hampoian’s first showing at this prestigious event and making the cut is a great accomplishment among such a talented field.  At just 1-over par, he made the cut to the third day and went on to shoot 75-74 for a 10-over total, 290.
Despite the sweltering heat down in Rhode Island for the week, these three golfers persevered to strongly represent New Hampshire golf.  Bobby Leopold (Rhode Island) ultimately won the event with a 3-under par three-day total, just two shots better than Paradis.
