Pleat Crowned Senior Champion for Fifth Time in Six Years
Author: Kate Kellar
September 7th 2016 - Enfield, NH –  Phil Pleat of Nashua Country Club has done it again—he won the New Hampshire Senior Amateur Championship, marking the fifth time he has won the Championship in the last six years.  Pleat shot two even par rounds in the 36-hole event to win by a four shot margin.  Following in behind was Bob Landry (Loudon Country Club) finishing the tournament at four-over par.
With a slight hiccup on the par three, fifth hole where he made double bogey, Pleat’s round was solid and consistent.  Talking about his round, Pleat stated, “I started off steady and then I made some mistakes on the tricky 5th hole”.  Pleat continued to say, “I missed some makeable birdie putts and then I made two long ones on 10 and 11”.
Holes 10 and 11 seemed to be the turning point of his round as he birdied both holes, which have consistently been some of the tougher holes on the course.  Prior to those holes, round one leader Bill Everett started to find some bogeys piling up on his card—he carded a bogey on holes 8, 9, and 10, right when Pleat was beginning to settle in on his strong round.
When it came down to it, it was going to be the player who avoided the bogeys that was going to win it.  Pleat said, “I was fortunate that the guys I was playing with weren’t making a lot of birdies”.  Being able to make par as often as he did was key to Pleat’s victory.
Defending champion, Bob Mielcarz (Concord Country Club) climbed the leaderboard in the second round by firing two-under par, 70, after opening the tournament with a round at seven over par.  Finishing tied for 3rd with Mielcarz was Danny Arvanitis (Derryfield Country Club) who shot 71.  Mielcarz and Arvanitis were the only two under-par rounds in the second 18 holes of the tournament.
Reflecting on the two days, Pleat commented, “It was a little ugly at times but I got the job done.  It’s a tough golf course and I’m mentally drained after two days.”
Montcalm Golf Club was a fantastic host for the 45th New Hampshire Senior Amateur Championship.  Playing at 6,300 yards, the course was in great shape and tested the ability of some of the top senior players in the Granite State.
