Platinum Pleats Adds Another Senior Championship to NHGA Victories
Author: Kate Kellar
September 21st 2017 - North Conway, NH –  Nashua Country Club’s Phil Pleat has done it again!  Pleat won the 2017 New Hampshire Senior Championship sponsored by Eric Ellis of Ameriprise Financial.  With a total score of one under par, 141 for the 36-hole championship at North Conway Country Club, Pleat now adds this title to the 19 previous New Hampshire Golf Association (NHGA) victories he has.  This marks his sixth Senior Championship win in seven years.

Beginning the day, Ken Nilson (Ridgewood CC) and Mike Blair (Bretwood GC) stood in Pleat’s way, but only be a small margin; Nilson led by two and Blair by one over Pleat.  For Nilson, it was two bogeys in his opening two holes and a double bogey on the 9th hole that set him back, forcing him to make a few birdies to get back into contention.  Blair began his round steady with pars and one birdie until the long par-3, 7th hole which he made bogey on after missing the green with his tee shot.  He closed out his front nine with a bogey.

While Blair was hanging on, Pleat made one bogey on his front nine, similar to his first round, and began to make his run on the back.  He birdied the 11th hole to put himself right up there with Blair and held onto that momentum.  Blair slipped up with a bogey on 12 and 14, opening the door for Pleat.  Entering his 16th hole, Pleat had a one stroke lead and went on to birdie 16, giving himself a cushion going into the closing two holes.  He ended up keeping that margin of victory for the remainder of the championship as Blair and Nilson both finished with a total of 143, one over par.

Conditions were tough in the final round as the wind was howling all day.  While it didn’t seem to affect Pleat all that much he mentioned, “With the wind, it was a lot of second guessing.”  That second guessing seemed to help him out though, as he finished as the only player under par for the championship.

With just two bogeys in 36 holes of competition this week, it’s clear that North Conway Country Club suits his game.  He says, “I’ve got good memories back 16 years ago in the State Am, I played fairly well.”

Now adding another trophy to his collection, he states, “It feels great.  It’s hard to believe.  I’m real fortunate.  There’s less shots that I can hit now and I just try to stick to my game plan and go about my business.  I’m very lucky.”

The NHGA would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at North Conway Country Club for their hospitality over the past few days.  The course was in great condition and proved to be a tough test for the top senior golfers from the Granite State.
