Nilson Nabs Number One Spot After Round One at the NH Senior
Author: Kate Kellar
September 20th 2017 - North Conway, NH –  After the opening round of the New Hampshire Senior Championship at North Conway Country Club in the northern part of the Granite State, Ken Nilson of Ridgewood Country Club leads the field by one stroke after carding a two under par, 69.  Mike Blair (Bretwood GC) trails behind Nilson by one stroke with a number of familiar New Hampshire golf names behind him including Phil Pleat (Nashua CC), Craig Steckowych (Portsmouth CC), and Bill Everett (Laconia CC).
Nilson’s round included five birdies and three bogeys, while still maintaining one under par on each side of the golf course to get to two under par for the day.  Nilson wasn’t the only under par round out there; Mike Blair carded one under par, 70 with a similar round to Nilson, four birdies and three bogeys.
As someone who is no stranger to being towards the top of the leaderboard, Phil Pleat will look to pass both Nilson and Blair as he attempts to defend his title.  Pleat has won the New Hampshire Senior Championship five times and totals 19 New Hampshire Golf Association championship victories.  In his opening round today, Pleat carded a steady even par, 71 with one bogey on the front nine and one birdie on the back nine.
Pleat has played in numerous different tournaments over the past few weeks including the New England Senior Amateur and Tri-State tournament this past weekend.  Talking about his game and the course he says, “I’m just trying to hit some fairways and greens and make some putts.  I’ve been on a variety of different greens so I’m just trying to get used to them, but the place is in great shape”.
Looking towards tomorrow, Pleat knows it’s going to take a great round to grab another win stating, “There’s a lot of good players in this field so anything can happen.  Someone could come from behind, light it up and start making putts”.
One of those golfers to keep an eye on is Laconia’s Bill Everett as he seeks redemption from last year where he led the tournament after Round One but dropped off and ended losing to Pleat in the final 18 holes of the championship.  This year Everett sits just two back of the lead with a 71, tied with Pleat and Steckowych.
Reflecting back on today’s round, Everett says, “It was a real steady round for me.  I hit 15 out of the 18 greens and missed three right on the edge and got them up and down.  Two careless three putts cost me a couple shots but I was real pleased with the way I played.”
Knowing that Pleat is a strong player and the one who defeated him last year he says, “When I play with Phil, I only have one thing in mind, to beat Phil so I figure if I can do that I’ll be in good shape.”
North Conway Country Club is playing at around 6,400 yards in great condition with the greens rolling smooth.  This year’s field of golfers includes past New Hampshire Senior champions and others looking to earn their first title.  This is the first time North Conway has hosted the New Hampshire Senior Championship, though they are very familiar with hosting many Hew Hampshire major championships.
