Nashua Boys Square Off: Ethier Comes Out on Top
Author: Kate Kellar
June 29th 2017 - Goffstown, NH –   For someone who has never played in the final match or even semifinal match of the Boys Junior Championship, Tommy Ethier of Nashua Country Club played like a seasoned veteran.  Ethier defeated Jack Brown, also of Nashua Country Club, 3 & 1 in the final match of the Junior Championship sponsored by Junior Golf Hub at Stonebridge Country Club.
Brown began the match with a perfect drive down the middle of the first hole, while Ethier found himself in the fairway on the parallel, second hole.  Ethier put his second shot next to the greenside bunker and Brown easily put his second shot on the green.  From a tough lie, Either sent it over the green into the fairway-height grass.  Needing to get it close to not the start the match down a hole, he chipped in for birdie, making a statement of how the match was to go.
From there, Ethier went on to win the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 9th holes to make the turn at 3 UP over Brown.  Ethier got to 4 UP after 11 holes, but Brown kept battling to keep the match alive.  The two went back and forth a few times on the back nine and Ethier was dormie going into the 16th hole.  With his putt on 16 just barely missing the hole, Brown drained his birdie putt to move onto 17 knowing that he needed to win 17 to advance.
Ethier mentioned after the round, “When he rolls in a birdie putt like that, it makes you nervous”.
With a stray tee shot, Brown put himself in poor position to make a move on 17 and ultimately lost to Ethier there.  The match was won by Ethier on the putting green.  He made the key, important putts but Brown uncharacteristically had a few three-putts that cost him a few holes.
Ethier commented on usual matches between the himself and Brown saying, “When we play at home, he’s pretty good and makes all those short ones.  He was struggling early so I decided to make him putt some of them”.
In terms of what was working well for Ethier this week he says, “I think I made timely putts.  That’s the biggest thing; I made putts that kept the round going and kept the momentum going.”  His important putts in the final match were on the 5th hole and 9th holes.  His putt on 5 was for birdie to win the hole and his putt on 9 was a 10-footer to save par and win the hole as well.
