Medalist Honors Belong with Paradis & DeVito at State Amateur
Author: Kate Kellar
July 11th 2017 - Keene, NH –  In what turned out to be an exciting second round finish, Matt Paradis (Concord CC) and John DeVito (Passaconaway CC) both finished with 36-hole totals of 137, 7-under par.  Each had a blemish-free second round with Paradis carding 66 and DeVito with 65.  Due to order of finish, Paradis will take the number one seed and DeVito will play in the number two seed position for match play.

Paradis, who started his second round on the 10th tee, went around Bretwood’s back nine at even-par but turned on the jets after making the turn.  He went on to make six birdies on his second nine of the day in true Paradis fashion.

After the round, Tournament Director Greg Howell had a chance to chat with Paradis for a few moments about his round.  Paradis said, “I started off hitting the ball pretty well and got it in play a bunch, giving myself some good looks.  I had one big momentum saver, it was on 15 when I was able to get up and down from 100 yards for par.”

No stranger to match play and advancing to the final match of the State Amateur, Paradis mentions his favorite part about this format saying, “I’m really competitive and it’s fun to go head to head against someone else and battle it out each and every hole”.  Paradis will face Nate Gardner in the Round of 64.

DeVito’s seven-under par round of 65 was one to remember.  Like Paradis, DeVito began the day on the 10th tee and went around the back nine of Bretwood’s North Course at three under par.  He kept the birdies going when he added four more to his card in the second half of his round.  DeVito nailed down the green speed today as he rolled in a few lengthy putts for birdie.

When it comes to match play, DeVito recently won the Mid-Amateur Match Play and says he plans to draw from some of that experience.  DeVito mentioned, “Historically, my record is pretty bad in match play.  I haven’t seen the round of 16, but I’ll be drawing from some of my shots from that tournament [Mid-Amateur Match Play]”.

DeVito will face Jake Hollander in the opening round of matches.

The New Hampshire Amateur Championship is a six-day event, beginning with 36-holes of stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday to determine the 64 players who will be advancing to the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday.  One round of matches will be played Wednesday, two rounds of matches will be played both Thursday and Friday, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on Saturday.
