Martel Matches Course Record at Rochester CC in Stroke Play
Author: Kate Kellar
August 9th 2017 - Rochester, NH –  After what can be described as an average opening round at the Stroke Play Championship sponsored by Willem Verweij & Associates Physical Therapy at Rochester Country Club, Mike Martel (Nashua CC) and Damon Salo (Bretwood GC) turned on the jets for under par rounds.  Martel tied the Rochester CC course record with an impressive eight-under par round of 64 while Salo shot 67 to put himself in second place behind Martel.
The irony of Martel and Damon Salo leading the way is that these two duked it out in a playoff in last year’s Stroke Play Championship at Beaver Meadow Golf Course.  Martel came out on top there but don’t count Damon out as he can fire some consistent, low rounds on the final day.
Martel went bogey free today on his way to one of his lowest tournament scores, 64.  Keeping it consistent, he was four under on the front and back of the golf course.  Salo had just one blemish on his card, but kept it steady with birdies for his 67.
As someone who has won this tournament before, Martel’s mindset is strong and steady, he mentioned, “I have to keep playing aggressive, good golf because there’s going to be a lot of people close to me.  I’ll probably be playing with Damon who can go out and shoot 67 very easily.”
Damon Salo, who has just recently returned to New Hampshire tournament play, talked about his round saying, “I just hit the fat part of the fairways.  The course is short enough where if you’re hitting driver everywhere and you’re keeping it in the fairway, you’ll have a short iron in.
“I just picked a target in the fairway and had a nice short wedge shot or an 8 or 9 iron in, so I had a lot of looks at birdie,” continued Salo.
Going into the final day and looking ahead to 36 holes of play, Salo will be looking to add a victory to his resume as he returns to work.  He says, “I like just focusing on one round at a time and grinding it out.”
The cut to the final day ended up at 159 (+15 for 36 holes) with 41 golfers advancing on.  Included in that number is home course club champion, Jamie Ferullo who is no stranger to this golf course.  Also continuing on is Matt Paradis who could easily sneak up on Martel and Salo as he sits just four shots back of the lead.  With 36 holes left to play, a champion will be decided on the final day.
The NHGA Stroke Play Championship is a 72-hole stroke play event. Held over three days, players play 36-holes before a cut is made to the low 40 players and ties. Those making the cut will play 36-holes in the final round. The event debuted in the year 2000 and this is the first time that Rochester Country Club has hosted the Championship.
