Laconia C.C. Set for 113th State Amateur Championship
Author: Kate Kellar
July 8th 2016 - Concord, NH –   The New Hampshire Golf Association is excited to crown another champion next week at Laconia Country Club for the 113th playing of the New Hampshire Amateur Championship, sponsored by Audi of Nashua.  Laconia CC has been preparing for this all year; the course is in pristine condition and ready for championship play.  The event begins on Monday, July 11th and will conclude on Saturday, July 16th

Laconia Country Club, established in 1922, has hosted the State Amateur six times prior to this year, with the first time being in 1930 and most recent in 2004.  The course is a great layout for match play, especially the last four holes which could decide a lot of matches, according to Laconia Head Golf Professional, Todd Rollins.  There is no doubt that Tom DiFonzo, Laconia Country Club Superintendent, and his staff will have the entire course and greens in great shape, giving good putters the opportunity to rise to the top.

The top amateur golfers from around the Granite State will tee off Monday morning in hopes of claiming the victory.  Among the players in the field this year are multiple past State Amateur Champions including Connor Greenleaf, the defending champion, who will be looking to win back-to-back State Amateurs, which has not been done since 1996, when Bob Mielcarz won in 1995 and 1996.  Joining Greenleaf are Michael Martel, 2013 Champion; Jim Cilley, 2011 Champion; Nick MacDonald, 2010 Champion; Matt Burroughs, 2006 Champion; Danny Arvanitis, 2001 Champion; Craig Steckowych, 1990 and 1998 Champion; and Phil Pleat, 1981, 1985, and 1997 Champion.

Many other players will be looking to capture their first State Amateur victory this year, including Ryan Kohler, the 2015 Mid-Amateur Champion and 2012 Stroke Play Champion.  Chris Houston will also be in the field this year and has home course advantage.  Matt Paradis will be looking to capitalize on his momentum as he has already won the Player’s Invitational this year, which is a repeat win from last year.

The New Hampshire Amateur Championship is a six-day event, beginning with 36-hole of stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday to determine the 64 players who will be advancing to the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday.  One round of matches will be played Wednesday, two rounds of matches will be played both Thursday and Friday, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on Saturday.
