Jelley Announces Resignation
August 17th 2015 -
Concord, NH – Golf is a game that lives in constant change. Rules, equipment, courses, and personalities have all changed over the years at NHGA Championships. However, over the last ten years there has been a mainstay at every New Hampshire Golf Association Championship: John Jelley. Jelley has been the Tournament Director for the NHGA for the past ten years. He has conducted over sixty major championships and worked over 600 tournament days. Jelley has molded the NHGA Championship program into one that is respected state and region wide. John Jelley has announced that the 2015 season will be his last as he plans a move to Florida to be closer to his wife, Debby.

“John’s announcement was a shock to all of us, but we are fully supportive of his desire to be closer to his family. John has been a constant ambassador to the NHGA and his devotion and loyalty have been unmatched over the years. We’ll miss not only his tournament expertise, but his love of the game and strong desire to see golf flourish in the Granite State.” NHGA Executive Director Matt Schmidt said.

John has been a member of the PGA since 1989. He is a PGA Master Professional, the highest classification a PGA member can achieve. He is one of just two Master Professionals in the state of New Hampshire and in 2013 he was given the New Hampshire PGA Chapter’s Bill Strausbaugh Award. Jelley has taught numerous rules clinics to PGA professionals and aspiring amateurs alike, and has himself achieved a 92% or higher on the PGA/USGA Rules of Golf Test an incredible eleven times.

NHGA Director of Member Services Greg Howell recalls his first season as a PJ Boatwright Intern working for Jelley: “It was apparent from the first day I met him that he has an immense passion for the game of golf. He is incredibly knowledgeable and it didn’t take long to start learning from him. He has always been willing to take the time to educate anybody who asks for help, and he is one of the main reasons I chose a career in golf administration. His presence at tournaments will be missed incredibly.”

Jelley’s last Championship will be a fitting one, the Mid-Amateur at Stonebridge Country Club where he was the head professional from 1998-2000. Prior to Stonebridge Jelley worked for the PGA of America as a Tournament Administrator for six years.
