Greenleaf Wins Amateur Championship

Bretton Woods, NH – Most thirty-six hole matches end well before the match makes it to the 18th hole a second time. Saturday, Connor Greenleaf (Windham CC) and Joe Leavitt (Atkinson Resort & CC) needed all thirty-six holes before Greenleaf won the 2015 New Hampshire Amateur title.

The pair of collegians were the co-medalists during stroke play the first two days, and earned the top two seeds in match play. Saturday’s layout played 6,950 yards which was a significant jump from the layout from stroke play. Both players struggled to find their rhythm early in the match as Greenleaf won three of the first five holes without making a birdie. As they progressed through the back nine of their morning round they began to score well and par was no longer good enough to win holes.

Leavitt was 2 up after the morning eighteen and seemed to have a good handle on the match. Greenleaf came out swinging in the afternoon with four birdies on the first six holes to get the match back to all square.

From there on the match was either All square or Leavitt was 1 up going to the 17th tee. While indicating a suggested line of putt on the 17th green Leavitt’s caddie touched the putting green, which is a loss of hole penalty. The match went to the 36th hole with Greenleaf 1 up. After both players knocked their second shots onto the green Greenleaf lagged a putt up to 4-feet. Leavitt just missed a birdie putt and Greenleaf sunk the par putt to clinch the tournament.
