DeVito Defines Pace at Bald Peak with Three Under Par, 68
Author: Kate Kellar
October 5th 2017 - Melvin Village, NH –  On a difficult, breezy day at Bald Peak Colony Club for the 34th Robert H. Elliott Mid-Amateur Championship sponsored by Ameriprise Financial, John DeVito (Passaconaway CC) rose to the top with an impressive three under par, 68 which is good enough to lead the way by three strokes.  The next closest competitor was Danny Arvanitis (Derryfield CC) who shot an even par, 71.
DeVito, who won the inaugural Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship earlier this season, has been displaying solid golf all year.  While Bald Peak was a true tough test for most in the field, he made it through with six birdies on his card and just three bogeys for his 68.
For DeVito, this course is about picking the right club and strategy, he says “I came up for a practice round which was definitely needed.  It’s not really a course where you can just rip driver everywhere.”  He mentioned that he hit a lot of great iron shots, including his driving irons off the tees.
With the greens being some of the toughest aspects of this course, DeVito was asked how he felt on the green today, saying “I felt pretty comfortable.  I had one three-putt out there, but other than that I held it together.  They’re just rolling really quick.  You have to really watch your speed.”
Meanwhile, Arvanitis who grew up around this golf course held a steady round, maneuvering his way to even par.  He started off with a double bogey, but turned it around with four total birdies on the day.  Another strong competitor in the field, Brett Wilson (The Golf Club of New England), returned a one over par, 72.  Wilson has experience winning this event as he accomplished that on two occasions, 2013 at Cochecho and 2014 at Lochmere.
In terms of his strategy, Wilson states, “It was just trying to not make a big number.  Trying to hit greens; they’re obviously very fast, very undulating.  So just trying to hit as many and escape with par when I could and try to make a few birdies to offset the inevitable bogeys out there.”
With a challenging course on their hands, Wilson said it well, “You take what the golf course gives you and if you get aggressive I think that’s where this golf course can really penalize you.”  His plan for the next round is to play conservatively, make a few birdies and avoid any big numbers that could hurt his position on the leaderboard.
Bald Peak Colony Club, which numerous players in the field had not seen prior to the Championship is playing at around 6,200 yards.  The Donald Ross designed course features fast-rolling greens with false fronts and undulation, which players must be able to navigate to avoid high numbers.
The Robert H. Elliott Mid-Amateur Championship is a 54-hole, individual stroke play event.  Competitors play 18 holes each of the first two days with a cut to the low 27 players plus ties after 36 holes.  Those players ages 25 and above with a handicap not exceeding 12.0 are eligible to compete in this Championship.
