DeVito Defeats Kohler to Capture Mid Amateur Match Play Title
Author: Kate Kellar
May 23rd 2017 - Concord, NH –  Golf can be a tough game, but not for Passaconaway Country Club’s John DeVito.  DeVito was able to defeat number one seed, Ryan Kohler (Stonebridge CC) in the final match of the Championship flight 3 & 2, while also being four-under par for his round.  Kohler also showed strong golf at Beaver Meadow throughout the three days of the tournament.
The semifinal match between Kohler and Jim Cilley (Ridgewood CC) made it to the 17th hole where Kohler ended it 2 & 1.  After nine holes, the match was All Square but Kohler took advance of a few opportunities to win the match.  DeVito downed John Idoine (North Conway CC) to give himself a little rest before facing Kohler in the afternoon.
The final match was a hard-fought battle that required birdies to win a hole.  DeVito birdied the fourth, fifth and sixth holes and made the turn at 2 UP after Kohler failed to match two of those birdies.  Despite driving the green on the fifth hole, Kohler’s putter let him down a little bit.  The back nine saw many pars, but DeVito made numerous important putts where it counted the most.
Reflecting back on his Championship-winning match, DeVito says, “I was putting really well and had a couple birds in the middle of the front nine.  I played the 6th hole really well and had a birdie there earlier in the day.
“I was just rolling it really well today”, continues DeVito.
This is DeVito’s first Championship victory.  Having had some experience with match play from competing in the State Amateur, this is DeVito’s first time truly finding success in this format and will hope to carry that over to this year’s State Amateur at Bretwood Golf Course.
From the First flight final match, Bobby Williams (Lake Sunapee CC) and Derek LeClair battled it out until the 17th hole.  Williams was able to put the match away 2 & 1.
In its first year, the Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship mirrors the format of the Senior Match Play.  Competitors ages 25 and over play 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine their seed and flight for the match play rounds beginning Tuesday.  The top 16 players are placed into the Championship Flight with the next 8 players being placed into the First Flight.
