Choukas Leads Way at Stroke Play
Author: Kate Kellar
August 8th 2016 - Concord, NH –  Nate Choukas (Hanover CC) fired an opening round of 3-under par 69 to take the first round lead at the 2016 NHGA Stroke Play Championship at Beaver Meadow GC. Choukas’s round included just a single bogey, to go along with four birdies. He leads Mike Martel and Josh Kibbe by a shot after each opened the championship with a round of 2-under par 70. Martel’s opening nine holes included five birdies and a bogey for a 4-under 32, but he was only able to conjure a single birdie on the back side and shot a 2-over 38.
Tommy Ethier (Nashua CC) joined Choukas, Kibbe, and Martel as the only other player under par. Choukas’s brother Phin (Hanover CC) opened with even par 72 and is joined by Danny Arvanitis (Derryfield CC), Cam Salo (Bretwood GC), and Jim Cilley (Ridgewood CC) all of whom stand at level par.
Beaver Meadow’s 6,344 yard layout proved to be a tough test for the best golfers in the State, with the score average hovering around 80 for the day. Firm and fast conditions, along with expertly manicured greens should present a tough test over the remaining 54-holes. All players will return tomorrow for 18 more holes before the field is cut to the low 40 players and ties before Wednesday’s 36-hole final round.
The NHGA Stroke Play Championship is a 72-hole stroke play event. Held over three days, players play 36-holes before a cut is made to the low 40 players and ties. Those making the cut will play 36-holes in the final round. The event debuted in the year 2000 and this is the first time that Beaver Meadow has hosted the Championship.
