HUDSON, NEW HAMPSHIRE- Joshua Chamberlain, playing out of Stonebridge Country Club, holds a one stroke lead at the 2014 New Hampshire Stroke Play Championshipafter the first round of the 72-hole event.

Chamberlain shot a five under par 67 on the Jungle Course at Green Meadow Golf Club making six birdies against a lone bogey.

Although Chamberlain's ball striking wasn't what he had hoped for his putting saved him, "I putted as well today as I have all year or maybe the last three years," he said after the round. "I wasn't hitting it great today. Anybody watching my round today would have thought I shot 77 not 67," he said "But any time I got within 10 feet I was making them which was the difference in the round."

Trailing Chamberlain by one stroke is Pembroke Pines Country Club's Jim Cilley who posted six birdies himself but dropped shots at two par 5s, the 3rd and the 13th.

The ageless Phil Pleat, who plays his golf across the Merrimack River at Nashua Country Club, is tied for third with Griffin Brown of the Overlook Club at 3 under 69.

One stroke behind them are good friends and club mates at Atkinson Resort and Country Club, Nick Pandelena and Joe Leavitt, the current New Hampshire Amateur champion.

Joining Pandelena and Leavitt at two under are A. J. Correia of Laconia CC, Makenzie Denver of Nashua CC, Cameron Salo of Bretwood Golf Club and Connor Greenleaf of Windham CC.

Larry Nuttall, of the host club Green Meadow GC, leads a group who finished at one under par that includes former champion Craig Steckowich along with Ryan Kohler, Nick Fairweather and Zach Temple.

Wednesday will see another 18 hole round with a cut to low 40 and ties after the conclusion of the round. The survivors will be tested with 36 holes on Thursday to determine the champion.
