Beaulieu Earns First NHGA Championship Title
Author: Kate Kellar
August 31st 2016 - Sutton, NH –  It a hard fought battle at the Country Club of New Hampshire between number one seed, Bob Mielcarz (Concord CC) and number three seed, Peter Beaulieu (Atkinson CC), Beaulieu defeated Mielcarz in 19 holes to become the 1st Senior Match Play Champion.

In the semifinal match in the morning, Beaulieu played a personal record round against Laconia CC member Bill Everett, where he shot a sub-70 score.  He stated, “I have never broken 70 in my life”. That momentum propelled him into the final match against Mielcarz.

The final match between Beaulieu and Mielcarz can be described as back-and-forth, as they each took turns at holding the lead.  After three holes, Mielcarz was 2 up, but the match went back to All Square after 8 holes.  Mielcarz, again, took a 2 up lead after 10 holes and the match was brought back to All Square by Beaulieu after 14.  Mielcarz answered back on 15 by sticking his tee shot right next to the hole, but then went on to bogey the 17th, going to the 18th hole All Square.

Going into 18, it was clear that Beaulieu couldn’t believe where he stood in the match and that he had taken the match that far, especially after the ups and downs earlier in the round.  Standing on the 18th green he thought, “I can’t believe I have a putt to win this thing”.  Both players ended up making par to extend the match to extra holes.  Ultimately, Mielcarz made bogey on the 19th hole of the match to give Beaulieu his first NHGA championship win.

Still not believing that he had won, let alone defeated Bob Mielcarz, Beaulieu said, “I expected to be at work today.  I’ve never even gotten to match play in the Amateur”.  He truly earned his win as he played some of his best golf in the three days of the Senior Match Play Championship.

While the Championship Flight semifinal matches were going on, the First Flight final match was taking place between Bill Krueger (Concord CC) and Bob Grassetti (Nashua CC).  Krueger and Grassetti took the match all the way to 18 and Krueger ended up winning 1 up, after Grassetti had a small lead for most of the match.

It can be agreed upon by all competitors that the Senior Match Play is a tournament they will look forward to next year.  Beaulieu said, “All the people I played against, they were the nicest guys and a great little ‘fraternity’ that plays in these things.  I really enjoyed it”.

In its first year, the Senior Match Play Championship mirrors the format of the NHGA Junior Championship.  Competitors ages 55 and over play 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine their seed and flight for the match play rounds beginning Tuesday.  The top 16 players are placed into the Championship Flight with the next 8 players being placed into the First Flight.
